Utah commuters brace for major I-15 reconstruction project over Labor Day weekend
What you need to know about the upcoming closure
The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is set to begin a major reconstruction project on a 1.25-mile stretch of I-15 in Salt Lake County over the Labor Day weekend. The project will require a full closure of the freeway in both directions between 700 East and 400 West.
Key details:
- Closure start: Friday, September 2, 2023, at 10:00 p.m.
- Closure end: Monday, September 5, 2023, at 5:00 a.m.
- Affected area: I-15 between 700 East and 400 West
- Detour route: Motorists will be detoured to I-215 and State Route 201
Why is this project necessary?
The reconstruction project is part of UDOT's ongoing efforts to improve the safety and capacity of I-15. The freeway in this area is heavily congested and has been the site of numerous accidents in recent years.
What work will be done?
During the closure, crews will be working to:
- Replace the aging pavement
- Repair and widen the bridges over 900 East and 400 West
- Install new drainage systems
- Upgrade the lighting and signage
How will this impact commuters?
The full closure of I-15 is expected to cause significant traffic delays in the area. Motorists are advised to plan ahead and allow for extra travel time. UDOT recommends using public transportation, carpooling, or working remotely if possible.
What are the alternative routes?
Motorists who need to travel between Salt Lake City and the west side of the valley will be detoured to I-215 and State Route 201. The following routes are recommended:
- From Salt Lake City to the west side: Take I-15 south to I-215 west. Take I-215 west to State Route 201 north. Take State Route 201 north to I-15 north.
- From the west side to Salt Lake City: Take I-15 south to State Route 201 south. Take State Route 201 south to I-215 east. Take I-215 east to I-15 north
